All Is Well

Am typing this one finger at a time - left-handed, at that.

Came through my shoulder replacement surgery fine. Roger says better than my surgery last month. This definitely rates right up there with a knee replacement. Have promised Roger I would be good. Doctor does not even want me lifting a pop can with my right hand.

Thank God, for Roger. He has definitely earned sainthood with all the TLC he is providing.

Staying pretty 'spaced out' with my pain meds at this point.

Promised I would let everyone know how I was doing via my blog. Thanks to everyone for all their thoughts and prayers.

Back to "Go"

Thursday, Jan. 10th, dawned bright and beautiful. One month since my shoulder surgery and I was feeling pretty good! Time to start physical therapy and get my right arm working half way decent again, I hoped.

Not to be. A noon appointment with my doctor and he wanted x-rays to make sure all was well, before cutting me loose to have some therapy and begin our 2008 season, with the second surgery planned for October. He came in to share that the x-rays showed that my shoulder was dislocated, and apparently had been since shortly after my surgery. He had been concerned that I might have some 'movement' due to the extensive damage to the socket, but was hopeful it was something we could live with until fall. But after getting a look at the x-rays, he was adamant that the second surgery can not be delayed.

So, once again, I'm scheduled for surgery on Jan. 22nd, this time to replace the shoulder joint and tighten all the tendons and ligaments, and repair the remaining damaged ones. Definitely not an 'out-patient' experience. I left the office feeling like my bright red balloon had just been popped!

Roger keeps assuring me 'it's for the best!' and I can even hear my Mom in heaven telling me the same thing: "all things happen for the good for those that love the Lord!' And I know . . . they are both right. But somehow I just feel like a 'game piece' in a Monopoly game . . . and I just got sent back to "Go"!

We continue to work on finishing up on detail work on the house, and Roger goes back and forth between working on the house and the new fifth wheel. It's become a bit of a 'private joke' between Roger and I. There's not a day that goes by that one of us doesn't look at the other and say, "I just love my house!" Guess it really is true that 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' - for after being without a home that was really 'ours' since 1989, we are enjoying every aspect of home ownership again.

We have even changed our habit of going out to breakfast each morning. It's just more fun, now, to sit and read the morning paper at our own table - with our own coffee and breakfast. How life changes from year to year!

We've laughed as we 'equip' our house with the necessities. We gave away so much stuff when moving things to storage, because it didn't make sense (at the time) to store it, for what we thought would be, long term. It's almost like being newly weds again - which is kinda fun!

Dinner & a Movie

Such is our life that often times our 'plans' change moment to moment. Upon learning that the field team that is based out of Missouri had decided not to renew for 2008, Roger offered for us to drive to Dexter, MO and pick up their truck and trailer. After talking it over with our boss in Billings, it was a go.

So yesterday morning (Sat 1/5) found us rolling out of our driveway at 6:00 a.m., headed east. A bit further east than we had originally thought! By the time we pulled in to Dexter, MO, we were about 20 miles from Kentucky & Tennessee to the east and Arkansas to the south! The weather had turned gray and drizzly, and a bit chillier than in OKC.

However, on our journey across Missouri on US 60, we stopped at a nice little place in Birch Tree, called Lucky's. There I found an old fashioned pineapple malt and Roger was tickled to find his favorite brand of peanut squares! It made for a nice stop along the way to break the day. Of course, we had started our day with a breakfast stop at the Cracker Barrel in Tulsa!

I tried out the new headphones the kids had given me for Christmas and enjoyed listening to my favorite Vince Gill songs until the battery gave out on my MP3 player.

We arrived in the 'big' town of Dexter about 3:00 p.m. and had no problem finding the truck and trailer. That 'yellow' sure stands out! The trailer will be ours for the next 3 years or so, but the truck will be hooked up to our old trailer and taken to a company property in Florida. So, I'll be following Roger back to OKC, driving our truck (without a trailer, thank goodness!).

We had been in this area about 12 years ago, and knew of the 'famous . . . or infamous' Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO. The is the original "Home of the Throwed Rolls". There are actually 3 of the 'real' thing (2 in Missouri and 1 in Alabama). They have been in business since 1942 and the food - and the atmosphere - are one of a kind. It's just a fun place to go. So, after checking into our motel, and parking the monster rig, we headed east once again for a bite of supper. It was already getting dark, although it was only 4:30, but we wanted to beat the Saturday evening supper crowd. With 'Sylivia's' help (the GPS), we drove right to it and was soon enjoying a HUGE glass of iced tea, and a 'fresh from the oven' hot roll, with a paper towel full of fresh fried okra. We were working on our second hot roll, when our country fried round steaks appeared! What a treat! Roger had opted for the 'rooster' portion, and it came served up in it's own BIG skillet, along with mashed potatoes, white beans and carrots! Thankfully, I had opted for the 'hen' portion, and it was still more than a body should eat! But, oh so good! And we both managed to finish off the meat, but not all the veges and rolls!

After 'frogging our sides' we headed back to Dexter and (by plan) got there in time to take in the 6:45 showing of the new movie "National Treasure". (No popcorn for us!) The little theatre sat just down the street from our motel and had two screens. Being a 'first run' movie - and a Saturday night - we had stopped by before going to supper to see if we could buy our tickets in advance. The guy assured us that there was no need for that - and, it turns out there wasn't, for there might have been 30 people in the entire theatre for the show. (Guess you can tell we are 'big city' folks!) It wasn't the Harkins in Bricktown, but not bad for the ticket price of $3.50! So that was our big Saturday night 'dinner & a movie' (the first in MANY years!) in the bustling metropolis of Dexter, MO!

Today finds us heading back to Springfield, where we'll stop for the night and meet some old friends for supper, before heading back to OKC Monday morning.

Our 'new' trailer is another Montana, but this one is 38 feet long. Roger tells me it's only 2 foot longer than our old one, but it 'feels' so much bigger. I'll, most likely, be a nervous wreck by the time we get home, with me following Roger all the way!

Word of the Day: FLUMP

One of the 'perks' of our job is having a lot of time off around the holidays - which means being available to have our grandkids spend some of the vacation time with us. Such was the case for the second day of the New Year.

Nick and Hunter were to be our guests, and all was going well until we got a call informing us that Hunter had cheerleading practice from 10:00 - 1:00. So off she went, which left Nick at loose ends.

One of my favorite 'time killers' is playing Scrabble against the computer and it seems I have been doing a lot of it since Christmas - with the gift of the latest version. I had taken a break from getting my closet organized (since the move) and Nick decided to 'watch'. He made the suggestion that I play the word "flump". Now, I assured him that was not a word, but to satisfy him I pulled up the dictionary - and what do you know! "Flump" - 'to fall heavily'.

I have been telling folks since July how I had slipped in the mud and fell, injuring my shoulder - when all along, what I had really done was "flumped!"

What a kick Nick got out of teaching Grandma a new word and we all had a good chuckle out of it for the rest of the day . Hence, our word for the day was "flump". (Disclaimer: that is according to the 2007 Scrabble dictionary; I haven't checked it out in good 'ol Webster!)

Hunter returned from practice and they spent the rest of the afternoon occupied with Guitar Hero - which allowed us to continue working on getting things put away.

One more football game completed our day (what is it with OU and bowl games?) - and 2008 is off with a bang (for West Virginia, anyways!).
